Fareham and Crofton Cricket Club Mens First XI v Fair Oak on Sat 12 Jun 2010 at 13:00
Fareham and Crofton Cricket Club Won by 81 runs

Match report Stubbs made the decisive contribution, with a 6-26 return, while Emery ripped out the Oaks lower order, taking three wickets without conceding a single run.

The win, a third in five games, left Fareham in a comfortable eighth place in the log.

Having been put in on what was always likely to be a difficult surface - it had rained heavily the preceding two days - Fareham were indebted to Luke Gould, who smacked a quick-fire 49 before holing out at deep mid-on with the jug money resting uneasily in his pocket.

Fareham's progress predictably slowed after Gould's departure, though Callum Fleming, with a confidence-boosting 24, and Tim Dix, with a patient 31, scored important runs in trying conditions.

Wickets tumbled all too regularly after that, but Oaks had few answers to the Emery late cut - the wristy robocop lookalike making a very handy 21 not out to lift the total to 172.

Tom Hockenhull (15) and Ed Kemp (14) gave the visitors a solid opening start with an opening stand of 24. But the introduction of change bowler Ed Stubbs put paid to all that. Stubbs, who has waited patiently in Fareham’s 2nd XI for several seasons, bowled his ten overs straight through and tore the heart out of the Fair Oak batting with six wickets at a personal cost of 26 runs – and that included two Rhys Oxley boundaries in his last over.

At 58-7 Oaks were deep in trouble. Oxley (19) and James Featherstone raised their spirits briefly with a stand of 27, but Reg Emery ended the visitors’ last hope by catching Oxley off his own bowling in his first over. He snapped up the last two wickets, too, with Fair Oak still eight runs short of a batting point, to finish with the remarkable figures of 2.4 overs, 2 maidens, 3 wickets for no runs.

Hero of the hour Ed Stubbs painted a calm, but naturally satified figure alongside his agent Cliff Hillier in the post-match press conference, recalling his spell of 7-68 on debut for the 4th XI, either 11 years ago or when he was 11 years of age. He is unsure. Stubbs also took 6-22 in a subsequent 2nd XI match against Vospers, but his six-wicket haul against Fair Oak was undoubtedly his finest hour
