Sarisbury Athletic v Fareham and Crofton Cricket Club Mens First XI on Sat 15 May 2010 at 13:00
Fareham and Crofton Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets

Match report First’s Win at Sarisbury.

The scenic "Hollow", home to Sarisbury Athletic, was host to the first win of the season for the 1st team.
In a well spirited game of cricket, which personified the manner in which the game should be played, Fareham came out on top in the last over.

Sarisbury opened up their innings in a very negative fashion with a fresh Bob Marchant cannoning into the pads of an S.A opener within 8 balls of commencement of play.
However from there, Matt Journeaux (32) along with C Mottola (64), built up a solid foundation for their team. The partnership was broken on 92, after a hard hitting display, by none other than promoted, Chris Hillier.
Hillier mathematically calculated that his best chance of getting Journeaux out was with a full toss, of all things. Sure enough Hillier made the break through, with aid of a good catch from Kev Light. Light then was forced to leave the field to call his friends and family to commemorate the occasion and to consume some painkillers. In his absence Hillier continued on his way claiming the scalp of Mottola on 62, this time the catch was taken in tiger like fashion by Bob Marchant. With the score now at 3-113 Sarisbury rebuilt through Davies and Floyd who moved the total along to 183 under limited pressure from the fielders. Fareham began to slip into a rut until Kev Light managed to trap Davies LBW for 42. From there on in the Fareham lads raised the sails on the Ship and powered through the tail order claiming the last 4 wickets for 24 runs. Richard Emery and Chris Hillier, both promoted for the match, certainly held their own, bowling a combined 18 overs with 3 wickets between them under considerable pressure. The concrete Bob Marchant finished with a somewhat exasperating 4-31 (9.3) and his apprentice in Luke Gould ended the day with 1-44 (8).

The high level of cricket continued the day through on a fast and bouncy track. Fareham lost an early wicket with Luke Gould departing early for 8. That loss only brought Kev Light to the crease though who plundered his way to 37 along side Richard Webb. The pair put on 93 in a partnership which consisted of predominantly boundaries. With Webb and Light both gone for 63 and 37 respectively the Fareham middle order stood tall. With Callum Fleming (39), Dan Berry (34) and Tim Dix (28) finishing off the total within the last over. Other than Bob Marchant throwing his wicket (and bat) away when a "flat head" was required, the Boys all valued their wicket and trusted the pitch. Webb, the main stay of the innings, was impressive early, negotiating any gremlins in the pitch. Light used brute strength to dispatch a ball over the road off the bowling off close friend Keith Hammond, and Berry and Dix both used intellect to negotiate the last 50 odd runs to see Fareham over the line.

Again special mentions go to Tim Dix for his motivational speech prior to the match, Pete Beeching for his lively fielding, Bob Marchant for an overall good performance, including his fielding, and Luke Gould for hitting the off stump.
