Fareham and Crofton Cricket Club Mens First XI v Portsmouth on Sat 08 May 2010 at 13:00
Fareham and Crofton Cricket Club Lost by 29 runs
Match report
A rain delayed start paired with a loss of toss by 2010 skipper, Bob Marchant, acted as early hindrances to the chances of the First XI. Portsmouth went in to bat first with their innings reduced to 45 overs, 9 per bowler, due to some light showers.
A sense of excitement about the seasons prospects for the club saw their intensity levels within the first 25 overs at an intimidating level. Portsmouth therefore succumbed to the early pressure loosing there first 6 wickets for 65 runs.
Luke Gould and Bob Machant bowled in tandom in their opening spells with much success. Luke however was, if possible, too good at times, beating everything bar the sturdy hands of keeper Tim Dix. He somehow failed to prize a wicket in his first spell to many peoples disbelief including his own. Edd Stubbs, on his Southern Electric Premier League debut, replaced Gould from the pavillion end and immediately made an impact. Stubbs removed the off stump of one of the Portsmouth openers in a very visually pleasing manner. Stubbs then swiftly pounced again claiming Portsmouths 1st drop with the aid of a well judged catch by fellow new comer, Pete Beeching. Bob Marchant Bowled his allotted overs within his first spell to restrict the scoring of Portsmouth and attempt to finish their innings off prematurely. He finished with commendable figures of 3-23 (9) including 3 maidens. Marchant led well from the front and was clearly intent on not letting the Portsmouth innings slip away from their grasp. Callum Fleming replaced him in the 19th over and picked up two of his own wickets leaving portsmouth well on the back foot on a slow and wet Bath Lane pitch. With the Score at 7-91 Portsmouths captain J.Moon teamed up with their number 9, J. Wright, to put on an 8th wicket stand of 77 to find the score at 7-168.
Thankfully the nagging line and length of Kev Light payed off though dismissing the Portsmouth number 9 for 49. However some heavy hitting by the Portsmouth captain, J.Moon, off the overs of Dan Reader and Dan Berry, who together went for 42 off 5 overs, took the game further away from Fareham. Eventually Luke Goulds luckless day took a turn for the better with him claiming the last 2 scalps of the innings to have Pompey all out for 210. 31 sundries were bowled .
The Fareham innings got off to a bad start with play again being delayed. The total subsequently was reduced to 157 from 32 with bowling restrictions, funnily, remaining constant for both sides at 9 overs each.
However the solid Richie Webb and youthful Luke Gould put all things aside and did what they did best. An impressive opening stand of 66 left only 91 runs for the rest of the team to scrap together. With both Gould and Webb gone for 27 conditions hastily deteriorated and the temperature was more suited to skiing rather than cricket. The Fareham batting failed quite unfortunately with the rest of the team amassing only 62 more runs. Contributions from Kev Light (16) and Dan Reader (18) were the only rateable mentions. The Ship went down 29 runs short.
Kudos to Edd Stubbs who impressed all with a commendable display with the ball and same goes for Pete Beeching whose fielding was blatantly elite
