Highfield v Fareham and Crofton Cricket Club Mens Second XI on Sat 08 May 2010 at 14:00
Fareham and Crofton Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report SECONDS UNBEATEN AFTER ONE GAME!
Fareham's Second team travel up the M27 to Eastleigh to play Highfield on the first saturday of the season. The skies were gloomy and the forecast not good as skipper Duncan Farmery lost his first toss of the year. Highfield elected to bat first on a typically good track at Hardmoor Sports Ground.
As play got under way there was some drizzle in the air but that did not stop Hubbard getting his side of to a flying start as he enjoyed the pace on the ball being delivered by Danny Durant. Pete Hicks, at the other end with the wind behind him was finding the going easier however and his first 7 overs cost just 13 runs, without getting the wicket he deserved. It was the introduction of Chris Hillier which brought the first wicket as he bowled opener Chris Hart and then had Steve Taylor stunningly caught by Andy King at slip, in the same over. The game then fell into a steady pattern with Fareham having a measure of control, but Hubbard always looking for opportunities to find the boundary from anything remotely loose. Gary Wyle replaced Hillier after his 7 over burst and bowled with his normal guile and picked up three wickets including having Hubbard well caught by King for a well made 73. This looked to give Fareham the advantage, but last season's nemisis (44 0ff 13 balls!) Martin Ashe was to come in a give his side a boost with a rapid 42, although he was given a life on 11 when Pennicott could not hang on to a sharp chance, until he too was decieved by Wylde, who bowled him.
At this stage it looked likely that Fareham could restrict the home side to under 200 but an unbroken partnership of 55 between Gerald Scott (46)and Goodall saw Highfield reach a credible 230-8 after their 45 overs.
At the break everyone was relieved to back into the warm clubhouse and have a cup of tea and endeavour to warm up! It was felt that with a good wicket a nd a short boundary one side that the score was not unattainable.
Tony Tucker and Liam Jones went out to open for Fareham and got the side off to a reasonable start, scoring at just over 4 an over before both were out after getting starts, for 24 and 16 respectively, both wickets falling to Goodall. This brought Tom Kent and Rob Thomas together and their partnership of 120 set Fareham on course for a victory, until Kent was well caught and bowled by Steve Taylor for 53. With Thomas being bowled by Ashe soon after for 47 and Pennicott out quickly too, the home side suddenly sensed and unlikely victory, but with the required run-rate now only just under four an over Andy King 36 not out and capain Farmery, 9 not out, guided the team home with two overs to spare without taking any risks.
The total of 23 points gained was a great reward for the perseverance of playing through the miserable part of the early afternoon, when the weather was at its worst.
