Fareham and Crofton Cricket Club Mens Third XI v Otterbourne II on Sat 08 May 2010 at 14:00
Fareham and Crofton Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets
Match report
Rain can’t stop 3’s starting season with a win.
Skipper Mark Collins had no hesitation in putting Otterbourne into bat on a cold and grey day at Bath Lane and his decision looked to have paid off when Chris Davey took a stunning catch off the second ball of the Otterbourne innings removing dangerman Wallis for 0. Stew Clarke & George Cornish bowled with control to keep the scoring to a minimum. Cornish soon had a second wicket Price unable to defend an inswinger from Cornish. With the first 10 overs complete it was time for the entry of 2nd team bowler of the year Reg Emery to enter the attack. Soon Otterborne were really struggling to get both Emery & Matt Gould away. When Emery removed Cornford & Cole in the same over & Shilling took a fine diving catch off the bowling of Gould it looked that Otterbourne would struggle to reach 100. But some spirited hitting from Purkis, Langrish & the impending bad weather gave Otterbourne hope of salvaging something from the game. Emery had other ideas and removed Purkis & Cole in succesive balls & when Clarke returned with an aggressive spell removing Langerish & then Thorne. Otterbourne had reached 129. Reg Emery finishing with 4 for 36 & both Cornish & Clarke taking 2 wickets a piece.
The Fareham reply started well with both openers looking in little trouble, but the weather seemed to be closing in. Matt Gould was trapped LBW just before rain forced the teams off for half an hour. When the drizzle had stopped 8 overs had been lost & the target had been revised to 105 from 34 overs. Fisher wasn’t hanging around and some lusty blows soon saw the target in sight. Meanwhile Kissane had been replaced by Stubbs & victory looked assured. Fisher fell 9 short of his half century & Emery looked uncomfortable for his 11 & it was up to Stubbs & Chris Davey to push Fareham across the finish line with Just under 10 overs to spare. A great start to the season for the newly promoted 3’s.
