Our History:
Fareham & Crofton Cricket Club was formed by the merger of Fareham Cricket Club and Crofton Cricket Club during the winter of 1989/90.
Fareham CC was formed in 1882 and moved to Bath Lane in 1904.
Crofton CC was formed in 1939. Playing their matches in Stubbington. Norman Stares was the driving force behind the establishment of a colts cricket in 1970 This was an unusual step at this time as until then junior cricket had largely been organised by schools. It was a far-sighted move and is the reason for the involvement of the likes of such players as Bob Marchant & Duncan Farmery.
The idea of the club merger had an appeal to both sides Fareham the infusion of younger players and Crofton the move from a very limited and deteriorating ground.
So the new club was formed with four league teams playing within the Hampshire Pyramid.
At this time the ‘B’ square was nothing more than a rolled and cut section of a hockey pitch. In the mid 90s a great contribution to the club was given by Roy Dean who spent numerous hours sourcing a lottery grant and all the required consents from the local authority to create a dedicated new cricket square.
Frustration grew about the quality of wickets that the council was able to provide in view of it budgetary limitations. The then head of leisure at Fareham Borough Council went out on a limb to assist by arranging an arrangement whereby the club leased the cricket squares from the council and was thereafter responsible for the management and upkeep of the two squares.
Graham Marchant was the first groundsman of this new era and put many many hours improving the playing surfaces Graham was assisted by the purchase of a roller for £50 by Paul Barrett apparently scrap value, with the care of Dave Keen and Colin Palmer the roller is still in use today.
After a couple of years Graham found that being a full time trucker and almost full time groundsman was too much. It was then suggested by Colin Palmer that the job was offered to Tony Brown who had recently retired from Winchester Tennis Club. Over the years Tony has spent hundreds and hundreds of hours into the ground and is still our groundsman today, although frustrated with the lack of bounce on the ‘A’ square..
Fareham & Crofton Cricket Club promotes cricket for abilities. Encouraging both boys and girls from the age of 6 years to learn and enjoy the game. In 2006 we were award Clubmark status by England & Wales Cricket Board in partnership with Sports England.
